My gear

Radios

HF

  • Xiegu G90
Does 500 kHz through 30 MHz in SSB, digital and CW. Up to 20W.
  • QRP-Labs QMX (Mid-band)
Can transmit on the 60m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m and 15m bands. About 5W on most bands, but only 4W on the higher bands (17m and 15m). I built this as a kit.

VHF and up

  • Alinco DR-605E
Up to 35W with unlocked RX/TX, see the link. I once built a little Arduino HAT to do APRS with it on holiday.
  • Vero VGC VR-N76
My favourite handheld transmitter, I use this with a little window-mount antenna in the car for APRS. Does a measly 5W.
  • Baofeng UV-5R
Unused, but I keep it charged as a backup emergency FM radio.

Morse keys

  • BaMaTech TP-III
My most expensive and favourite key, it’s nice and small and works really well.
  • Xiegu VK-6
A somewhat heavier paddle for use on a desk. It still slides around a little, but it’s a lot better than the other keys I used before
  • K6ARK 3D printed key
It’s a great little backup key, but I have issues with it getting stuck.
  • Putikeeg stainless steel key
Great to start with, but also has issues with getting stuck when somewhat tight.
  • Wood block and paperclips
I had to use something to practice and was my first radio related experiment

Antennas

QTH

  • An end-fed halfwave strung across my backyard. It’s extremely noisy and almost unusable during the day, but it’s better than having nothing.
  • An assortment of small antennas and accompanying SDRs inside the attic that listen to:
    • APRS (automatic packet reporting system)
    • ADS-B (aircraft position reporting)
    • P2000 (national pager system for emergency services)

Portable

  • 20/10m EFHW from hfkits.nl
This is my favourite, because it works well and is the easiest to set up without any damage to the surrounding area
  • My 60m-15m linked dipole
I spent a good while building and tuning this, but setting it up takes a lot of space and a relatively long time so I don’t use it as much as I would like.
  • Red ground-spike antenna with 5m(+) whip
Like almost everyone I have this antenna, which is great to set up quickly but has the downside of making a little hole which is not allowed everywhere. It also has ten radials to spread out. It does 20m and lower, but with my homemade PVC coil it also does 40m.
